This is a crucial question that Paul begins to answer in Romans 6. Being "under law" = thinking that something you do adds to your acceptance before God. Being "under grace" = knowing that NOTHING we do - adds to the righteousness [Christ's righteousness (+R)] earned over a life time of faithfulness to God ending in his gruesome death on the cross] that was imputed to us at salvation. An act of God NOT any act on my behalf.
